Étienne Wasmer who joined the Department in January 2004 was nominated for the 2004 Award for best young French economist. This award, given by ''Le Monde Économie'' and the Circle of Economists, is designed to honor French researchers under 40 years old.

Grants for our graduate students
Mathieu Grenier, Dominick Latremouille-Viau and Valérie Raymond each received a grant of 17 500 $ from the CRSH for the year 2004-2005. Abdelkhalek Abderhouch, Sameh Bel Hadj Ali, Ha Dao Ngoc, Leila Khessairi, Thi Huong Lan Khong and Mourad Mzali, all in the Masters in economics program, received grants of 5 000 $ from Hydro-Quebec. Hydro-Québec also awarded two 6 000 $ grants to doctoral candidates Khaznaji and Flaubert Mbiekop.
Clément Lemelin honored
The Management Students Association awarded the Lucie Laplante Prize to professor Clément Lemelin last April. This award is given each year to the professor who has distinguished himself in his instruction as well as in his relationships with students in the department and their associations.
A new research center at the ESG
Étienne Wasmer, Research Fellow at ECARES and professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, has accepted to join the Department at UQAM to direct a new research center on the dynamic of the labor market, starting in January 2004. This is good news for the department, because Mr. Wassmer’s center will keep UQAM on the cutting edge of research in macroeconomic theory of the labor market and applied economics techniques.

Grants for our Masters students
Mathieu Arseneau, Dominic D'Aoust and Régine Lapointe each received a grant of 17 500 $ from the CRSH for the year 2003-2004. Pascal Bédard was one of five students to receive a 15 000 $ grant from the Minister of Finance of Quebec.
Award for Best Thesis
The Master of Economics honored three students with the best master’s theses for the 2002-2003 academic year. The jury, composed of students Valérie Beauchamp and Mathieu Arseneau and of professors Francine Mayer and Stéphane Pallage, chose to honor the following students:
- Award for Best Thesis (750 $) to Jean-Guillaume Forand for his thesis entitled “Two perspectives on the foundations of game theory”;
- Second Place (250 $) to Tomas Haug for his thesis entitled “Coalition formation in the dissuasion of crime'';
- Honorable mention to Wiston Guillaume for his thesis entitled “The resale market for commercial airplanes''.
Three new professors join the Department
Starting June 1st, Samuel Danthine, of the University of Rochester, will join the department as an assistant professor. He specializes in macroeconomics and labor economics. Stéphane Auray, Ph.D. from the University of Toulouse, will join us as a visiting professor for one year. His work is in macroeconomics. And Arianna Degan, Ph.D. U Penn, will join us in January 2004 as an assistant professor. Prior to coming to Montréal, Arianne will be visiting the Wallis Institute of Political Economy at the University of Rochester.
Visit from professor François Gardes of the Sorbonne and professor Steeve Mongrain of SFU
This June, François Gardes will visit the Department. He will give a six-hour class on the estimation of demand and will collaborate with Philip Merrigan, professor at the Department. During the same time, Steeve Mongrain (Simon Fraser University) will be here as well to collaborate with Nicolas Marceau, professor at the Department.
