Professors to leave from the Department

Paul-Martel Roy, a professor at the Department since its inception, will retire in 2003. At least, he will retire from teaching, but he will continue to be active in developing countries and participate in various research activities. He will also remain the representative of the Department for international cooperation.

Alain Paquet, was elected deputy in Laval-des-Rapides in the provincial elections last April. He will therefore take a leave of absence from UQAM, but will still pursue research with his colleagues.

Pierre Fortin will take a sabbatical starting June 1st 2003.

Harry Johnson Award 2002

The Canadian Economic Association presented the Harry Johnson award for the best article published in 2002 in Canadian Economic Revue to Robin Boadway, Nicolas Marceau and Steeve Mongrain for their article titled "Joint Tax Evasion".

Pierre Lefebvre and Philip Merrigan were given an honorable mention for their article "The Effect of Childcare and Early Education Arrangements on Developmental Outcomes of Young Children" published in Canadian Public Policy.

The Center for research on employment and economic fluctuations (CREFÉ) becomes the inter-university center for risk, employment, and economic policy (CIRPÉE)

The Administrative Council of UQAM adopted a resolution to unite research centers at UQAM, University of Laval, and the HEC in order to form the Inter-university center for risk, employment, and economic policy (CIRPÉE).

The administrative council congratulate the director of the center, Louis Phaneuf, and its members for their research and their international presence in the field, as well as their commitment to the education of students in the Department of Economics.

Services worth between 11,34 $ and 14,40 $ per hour

Ruth Rose, professor at the Department, published a study on domestic workers in Quebec. The objective of this study, realized through collaboration with  Elizabeth Ouellet, was to estimate the value of the work done by domestic aides in order to convince the public and politicians to put in place measures to protect these workers. Honorary doctorate bestowed on François Bourguignon

The UQAM administrative council will present an honorary doctorate to François Bourguignon this October. François Bourguignon is a professor of Economics  at l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and editor of the European Economic Review, a prestigious economics journal. He is currently a member of the Economic Analysis Council, which advises Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.

Born May 22, 1945, Mr. Bourguignon studied at École Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Économique (ENSAE) and Université de Paris VI where he obtained an advanced degree in applied mathematics. He finished his doctorate and won the award for best thesis, at the University of Western Ontario in 1975, and also received a doctorate from l’Université d'Orléans in 1979.

Professor Bourguignon has a high-profile career in research and instruction. His areas of specialization are the distribution of revenue, problems of inequality and poverty, economic development, and individual and household finance. He has lectured and been a guest professor internationally, as well as held many prestigious research positions.

François Bourguignon is a consultant at the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE), the European Commission, and the International Labor Organization. He became a fellow of the Econometrics Society in 1985 and president of the European Society for Population Economics ten years later. He has garnered many prizes and awards for his work, including the El Fasi award for development economics and numerous awards from the National Center for Scientific Research.

Mr. Bourguignon has contributed many articles in well-respected journals, such as the Journal of Economic Theory, Econometrica, The Review of Economic Studies and The Journal of Political Economy, and has participated in many studies and reports for international organizations.

2001 IREC laureates

UQAM graduates received 4 of 6 awards attributed by the Institute for Contemporary Economic Research. Among the winners was Guy Caron, Master of Economics, who won an honorable mention for his thesis titled “Student loan programs reimbursable based on income: a Quebecois perspective”, under the direction of Clément Lemelin.
